The chess world has just been flipped upside down. If you thought Gukesh D was going to rule for a decade, you haven't been watching Javokhir Sindarov.
As of April 14, 2026, the dust has settled in Cyprus, and we have a new challenger. Sindarov didn't just win the Candidates; he destroyed it. With a massive 10/14 score and zero losses, he proved that he is the most dangerous player on the planet right now.
When these two meet later this year, it will be the youngest World Championship match ever. Both players are only 20 years old. But while Gukesh has the title, Sindarov has the "teeth."
Here is everything you need to know about the match everyone is talking about.
The Champion in Trouble?
Gukesh D made history in 2024 by becoming the youngest undisputed champion ever. But 2026 has been a nightmare for him. He finished 9th out of 10 in Prague and looked lost.
He has actually stopped playing in tournaments to hide away and train. He knows that the Sindarov who just won the Candidates is not the same kid he played years ago. Gukesh is a master of defense, but can he defend against a player who currently looks like a computer?
The Challenger: The Uzbek "Winning Machine"
Javokhir Sindarov is on a 50-game unbeaten streak. Read that again. Fifty games without a single loss in classical chess.
He was a prodigy who became a Grandmaster at 12, just like Gukesh. But while Gukesh focuses on long, slow squeezes, Sindarov plays with a speed and power that is terrifying. Backed by the "Uzbek Gold Team," he has found new moves using the latest AI that are breaking the game. Even legend Garry Kasparov says Sindarov is the favorite.
THE FEARLESS FORECAST: Sindarov Wins 7.5 – 5.5
We think the crown is moving to Uzbekistan. Here is how we see the match going down:
- Rounds 1–4: The Wall of Draws. Gukesh will try to play super safe to fix his bad form. Sindarov will push, but Gukesh’s "monk-like" calm will keep the score 2.0 – 2.0.
- Round 5: THE BREAKTHROUGH. Sindarov wins with White. He uses a secret "Italian Game" plan that catches Gukesh in a bad time scramble.
- Rounds 6–9: The Frustration. Gukesh gets winning positions in the Catalan, but Sindarov defends like a monster. Four more draws. Score: 3.5 – 4.5.
- Round 10: THE KNOCKOUT. Gukesh takes a huge risk with the Najdorf Sicilian. It’s a mistake. Sindarov plays with 99% accuracy and wins. Now he leads by two.
- Round 13: THE FIGHTBACK. Gukesh wins a masterpiece to keep his hopes alive. Score: 5.5 – 6.5.
- Round 14: THE END. Gukesh must win with Black, which is almost impossible. Sindarov punishes Gukesh's aggression and wins the match.
The Opening Battlegrounds
1. The Catalan This is Gukesh's home. He uses it to try and slowly win. But Sindarov's team are experts at stopping this opening. If Gukesh can't win here, he can't win the match.
2. The Italian Game Both players love this. It's an old opening, but they have new AI tricks. This is where the most dangerous fights will happen.
3. The Berlin Wall When Gukesh is in trouble, he will use the Berlin to get a draw. The question is: can Sindarov find a crack in the wall?
Why Sindarov is the Favorite
Right now, Sindarov is simply more accurate. His "Nodes Per Second" (how fast he calculates) is the highest in the world. Gukesh is a genius, but he is currently out of form and under massive pressure.
The "ChessBotBuddies" team is calling it now: We will have a new World Champion by the end of 2026.
What do you think? Can Gukesh find his "2024 Magic" again, or is the Sindarov era officially here? Let us know in the comments!
